A Survey on Medical Utilization of Out Patients at the General Hospitals in Seoul


Abstract
The purpose of this survey was to analyze the Medical care utilization of out patients at the hospital. 505 out patients were selected randomly at two general hospitals in Seoul for this survey conducted from Feb. 21 to March 21, 1984.
The questionnaires which were made out by the above writers were used and pilot-tested before.
The major findings from this survey was as follows;
1. Accessibility of the general hospital was not influencing utilization rate of out patients, (p>0.1).
2. The good medical teem was answered to as the most important factor to increase the frequency of sick calls from out patients.
3. Regarding waiting lead time from submission of medical requests to doctor¢¥s consults, it took 80¡¾54.09 minutes for out patients who had come to hospitals with advanced appointment, and as much as 101.26¡¾54.98 minutes for the out patients who had come to hospitals without advanced appointment.
4. Consultation took over five minutes among the majority of but patients (about 71.8%), and this figure varies significantly by department according to the statistics (p<0.001).
5. 385 out patients were not satisfied with the consultation of doctors. It totaled only 20.1% who have received from nurse the explanation why they had undergone the clinical tests, and only 31% who have received from nurse how to use the drugs. Some out patients, who were not satisfied with doctor¢¥s consultation, were found to have further consultation from nurses, and these patients account for 11.2% of total 385 patients.
6. The extent of patient¢¥s awareness of the results of the clinical tests varies significantly by department according to the statistics (p<0.05).
